How long does a new concrete driveway take to cure?
While you can usually walk on new concrete after 24 to 48 hours, it takes about 28 days to reach its full structural strength. We recommend waiting at least 7 to 10 days before driving a vehicle on a new driveway to prevent premature cracking or indentations.
Will my concrete inevitably crack?
Concrete is a rigid material that expands and contracts with temperature changes. To manage this, we install control joints (the lines you see in sidewalks). These joints create “planned” cracks, directing the stress to a specific line rather than allowing random cracks to appear across the surface. While no one can guarantee zero cracks over 30 years, our preparation process minimizes the risk significantly.
How do I maintain my new concrete installation?
Concrete is incredibly low-maintenance. For standard finishes, occasional sweeping and washing with a garden hose are sufficient. For decorative or stamped concrete, we recommend applying a high-quality sealer every 2-3 years. Sealing protects the color from UV rays and prevents oil or chemicals from staining the surface.
Is stamped concrete more expensive than regular concrete?
Yes, decorative stamped concrete is more expensive because it requires more labor and specialized materials. However, it adds significantly more value to your home’s appraisal and provides a high-end look that mimics expensive stone or brick.
Can you pour concrete over an existing driveway?
In some cases, we can apply a concrete overlay to refresh a worn-out surface. However, if the existing driveway has deep structural cracks or is sinking, the best solution is to remove the old concrete and start fresh. Pouring new concrete over a failing base will only lead to the new layer cracking in the same spots.
